Developing an education program for the patients who are not health literate will improve their quality and quantity of life for the cardiac health care patients. As a health education specialist, I will assist in planning a program that works effectively and specifically for these patients. I want the community and stakeholders to be involved in the planning process by communicating to them the importance of the need for health literacy in cardiac patients (Competency 2.1). The desired outcome from this program would be to see more patients taking their medications as prescribed and understanding how the medication works (Competency 2.2). The Social Cognitive Theory is on major strategy I would use to provide the best intervention for the lack of health literacy (Competency 2.3). This theory interrelates personal factors, behavior factors, and environment factors on why a certain behavior takes place. I plan to determine what resources will be required to put this program into action such as several health education specialist on the job to teach patients about their medications and when to take them (Competency 2.4). The cardiology office only has two health education specialists on staff at this current time. Understaffing could be a hindrance with this program since two health education specialists are not enough to get to every patient that comes in for a visit (Competency 2.5). Hiring more health education staff will be mandatory in order for a successful program.
