The first responsibility of a health education specialist is to assess the need, asset, and capacity for the purpose of health education. In my future career, I plan to conduct surveys on how to improve the patients visit to the cardiologist and what are causes for them not regularly taken their prescribed medication. I will plan the assessment process by identifying what resources already exist for the patients and what resources are needed to better improve patient quality of care (Competency 1.1). To access the existing information on why patients don’t regularly take their prescribed medication, I will search databases for research on this growing issue (Competency 1.2). Once I collect primary and secondary data, I will integrate the two for the best results (Competency 1.3). Once data collection is completed, I can link behavioral, environmental, and genetic factors that hinder the patients from taking their medications as directed (Competency 1.4). There is a possibility of identifying that patients are not health literate; therefore don’t understand when/why to take a specific medication (Competency 1.5). A program may need to be implemented where a health education specialist consults with the patient after their cardiology visit to explain the importance of a certain medication to them (Competency 1.6). I will report these findings so that my work place may see improved health for cardiac patients (Competency 1.7).
